The journey that leads to ANPF’s celebrated Fall Festival begins in November, when the Play Reading Committee convenes.
The Committee’s more than 50 volunteer readers spend the next five months meeting in discussion groups to debate the merits of the 400 plays submitted to ANPF each year.
The readers discover the 12 finalists, from which the artistic director picks the four winners – the top one percent of the 400 plays we receive.
The Reading Committee is the largest volunteer group within ANPF. Readers with a variety of backgrounds join or are recruited from the community at large. Some of our readers are former thespians, playwrights, and directors. Others join out of general interest or because of their overall passion for the theatre.
Becoming a reader is certainly a substantial commitment – each reader will spend many months reading and evaluating 50-60 plays.
It is also a great deal of fun! In fact, more than 75% of our readers return to the process year after year.
If you’d like to join in this exciting venture, complete the Reading Committee Questionnaire and follow the submission instructions in the document.
